Studio Session: Wareed at KCPR

Released January, 2026. This production brought together KCPR-FM, a student-run, noncommercial radio station that has been part of San Luis Obispo’s cultural life since 1968, and Wareed. Licensed by the FCC and operated by Cal Poly students, KCPR has long served as a platform for emerging music, arts, and local voices on the Central Coast. Through this collaboration, students working across music and journalism came together to select, produce, and share living musical traditions through broadcast and video. Visit KCPR-FM at kcpr.org.

Spanning Arabic, Persian, Armenian, and Turkish influences, the set moves between structured ensemble pieces and improvised taqsim, where individual musicians explore maqamat freely before the rhythm enters. These moments of solo expression give way to driving ostinatos and full-ensemble textures, highlighting both the depth and diversity of the repertoire.
